From a children's workshop to a club
The club's institutional history begins in 2020, when families connected to the Euskal Erría 70 Chess Workshop started building a structure around their children's educational space. They chose the name of Mikhail Tal, the eighth world champion.
That origin placed teaching at the center of the project from the outset.
The program documented by the club later broadened that starting point. It serves children, young people and adults, with pathways from beginner lessons to advanced training.
The range of ages and levels extended the workshop's educational character without confining the club to children's instruction.
Chess in Uruguayan Sign Language
In June 2023, a chess course in Uruguayan Sign Language for deaf people opened at Enlace Cowork. Its defining feature was not simply access to an activity, but instruction in the participants' own language.
Accessibility was built into the teaching method.
Three months later, the club held a tournament at the Uruguayan Association of the Deaf for players who knew USL. The initiative had moved from learning into organized competition.
The work did not end in 2023. In November 2025, the club documented a closing tournament for its Uruguayan Sign Language Chess School, and in June 2026 it announced that classes had returned.
The LSU program is therefore documented in 2023, 2025, and 2026.
From hosting finals to winning Serie A
The Uruguayan Chess Federation named Mijail Tal as organizer of the Women's Championship Final in 2022 and again in 2023. The repeated assignment linked the club to two consecutive editions of a national final.
In 2024, the club organized the National Interclub Championship with federation support. Mijail Tal A also finished first in Serie A.
Hosting the tournament and winning that division captured the project's competitive leap.
In January 2025, the federation recorded Andrés Rodríguez's transfer from Progreso to Mijail Tal. Later that year, the grandmaster won the national absolute final with 8.5 points out of 9.
For an institution whose public story starts in 2020, the sequence shows a rapid change of scale between the original workshop and the national absolute championship.
