Club de Ajedrez de Santa Bernardina

Chess activity within a social club in Santa Bernardina has a recurring home in its library for team tournaments and intergenerational play.

The library as a chess room

Chess forms part of Club Social y Deportivo Santa Bernardina in the locality of the same name. Its tournaments have repeatedly been staged in the club library, placing chess within a broader community setting rather than an isolated specialist venue.

In 2013, the social club supported a delegation from Santa Bernardina's School No. 11 at a Durazno youth championship. More than a decade later, the 2024 Winter Tournament brought players of all ages and levels into the library, where Santa Bernardina player Mathías Barros won undefeated.

The tournament that gathers Durazno's clubs

The Durazno Chess Federation's Federal Team Tournament began in 2010. Santa Bernardina has been its recurring host since 2014, making the library closely associated with a departmental team competition.

Santa Bernardina reclaimed the title in the event played in late 2023 after a seven-year wait, with Mathías Barros, Sheyla Machado and Santiago Presa. When the tournament reached its twelfth edition in January 2025, the club hosted it again and finished second.

Those results belong to a recurring tournament that brings together the clubs of the departmental federation.

From the locality to the national circuit

The club's organizing role also extended beyond its library. In July 2025 it staged the National League's open Centro Sur event at Durazno's Casa de los Deportes.

Lautaro Varela won undefeated and Mathías Barros placed third; both had represented Santa Bernardina and were among the announced qualifiers for the national final.

Youth development in Durazno is shared among several institutions. In April 2026, Caterina Altesor and Sheyla Machado were training at both Santa Bernardina and Centro Unión while representing the Durazno Chess School, placing the club as one supporting node within a departmental network rather than its sole center.
