A memory turned into a circuit
Juan Carlos Viana's name was already part of Tacuarembó's public chess culture in 2023, when the departmental government organized a youth tournament in his honor. Local groups supporting the event included Club Tacuarembó and Círculo Policial.
In 2025, a competition bearing his name was presented at Club Tacuarembó. FIDE registered the opening tournament and stages II and III, turning the tribute into a recurring part of rated chess competition.
The champion behind the name
Juan Carlos Viana is remembered in Tacuarembó as a Uruguayan chess champion, with local accounts dating the title to 1978. His name gives the circuit a reference rooted directly in the department's sporting history.
Each stage places that local history at the center of a contemporary event. The tribute remains connected to play through tournaments that produce official results and bring the chess community together again.
From northern Uruguay to the border
The second stage in 2025 reached beyond the department. The winner and third-place finisher came from Rivera, while fourth place went to a player from Santana do Livramento on the Brazilian side of the border.
In 2026, FIDE registered another stage of the circuit as a standard tournament in the city of Tacuarembó. The project's continuity and the presence of players from northern Uruguay and Brazil give it a concrete regional dimension.
A partnership reaching Montevideo
The fourth stage in 2026 was co-organized by Club de Ajedrez Tacuarembó and Los Trebejos, which the Uruguayan Chess Federation lists in Montevideo. Club Tacuarembó remained the playing venue.
The result is a practical network: shared event production, opponents from several places and Tacuarembó as the gathering point. The circuit retains its local identity while connecting with other centers of Uruguayan chess.
