Club de Ajedrez UCU

A Montevideo university club whose recent open series has become a regular link between campus life and rated competition.

From a first open to a frequent series

The official channel presents Club de Ajedrez UCU as a club at Universidad Católica del Uruguay that runs tournaments and workshops. Its first numbered event documented by FIDE was a 40-player rapid open in Montevideo on December 7, 2024.

The series changed time controls as its numbering advanced: the fifth edition was blitz in October 2025, while the ninth returned to rapid in May 2026. On August 15, 2026, the series reached its twelfth edition with a nine-round blitz at Espacio Bildung, within UCU’s Montevideo campus in La Blanqueada.

Pairs as a social format

The tenth edition, called “Todo o Nada,” replaced the usual individual structure with two-person teams. Its 82 players in 41 pairs made it the largest turnout the club had reported for the series at that point.

The club’s own communication acknowledges competition but emphasizes enjoyment, meeting others and sharing a welcoming space. That purpose helps explain why workshops and rated opens sit within the same university project.
