Proyecto Ajedrez Udelar

A Universidad de la República cultural initiative connecting chess with teaching, research, design and open gatherings.

A cultural project spread across the university

Proyecto Ajedrez Udelar began in 2010 within the culture area of Bienestar Universitario. It was conceived as a way to share chess as a cultural good through teaching and communal play, with a program that moves among itinerant workshops, tournaments, seminars, publications and forums.

The project also developed ties with academic, research and university extension initiatives. In 2022 it brought together ten specialists from Argentina, Spain and Uruguay for a series on chess and academic disciplines; the resulting material became “Ajedrez, arte y cultura,” one of three books listed by the project in 2026.

Chess pieces as design assignments

The relationship with Facultad de Arquitectura, Diseño y Urbanismo (FADU) provides one of the project’s most distinctive threads. Since 2011, first-year chess-set assignments have followed a theme proposed by Ajedrez Udelar, turning the board into a question of form, meaning and culture as well as play.

In 2023, the thirteenth tournament shared the “Cultura es diversidad” event with an exhibition of Staunton sets redesigned by students. A year later, mental well-being inspired sets based on six films while the fourteenth tournament ran alongside the wider Cultura Fest program.

Tournaments designed for participation

The numbered tournaments have given the project a public face without reducing it to standings. The 2021 eleventh edition at the Cabildo de Montevideo drew more than one hundred players from several departments and added teams, color groups and raffles to its rapid-play categories.

The 2024 Apertura continued that approach with randomly formed teams balanced by rating and admission open to people without prior experience. In 2026, an event at Facultad de Ingeniería placed a rapid tournament beside a mathematics workshop, casual play and the launch of the third book, embedding competition in a broader cultural program.
