Centro Unión Cosmopolita was established on 25 August 1901 through the merger of the recreational societies Unión and Cosmopolita. In federation chess, the section appears as Cosmopolita, while the host institution retains its full name.

In 2007, the center was one of the venues for Colonia del Sacramento's chess festival. It hosted departmental school competitions from under 8 through under 18, while masters from Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay took part in a program that also occupied other spaces across the city.

Two years later, the center itself organized the fourth International Chess Festival, with youth categories and leading players from Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil. At the 2007 and 2009 festivals, competitions for school-age and youth players shared the program with events of regional reach.

A room for several levels of competition

The range of that role is visible in the national events that followed. The 2022 Uruguayan Amateur Championship and the semifinal of the 2023 Uruguayan Championship were played at the center; in 2024 it also hosted the national senior and veterans tournaments, which were organized by Club Solís de Pando.

Cosmopolita's link to national competition also runs through its players. Rocco Monferrato represented Uruguay at the 2022 World Under 20 Championship, and federation records for the 2026 National Youth Festival included Cosmopolita players in the under 8, under 14 and under 16 sections.

Taking the boards into the neighborhoods

In 2023, the section launched a winter tournament away from its main rooms, at the El General branch of Casa de la Cultura. It brought together students from Cosmopolita's chess school and the cultural branches in El General and Progreso, creating a meeting point between educational spaces in different neighborhoods.

The following year, the center organized a public Chess in the Street activity on its terrace as part of a nationwide day open to residents and students. Considered alongside the national championships and the 2026 youth entries, these episodes show a profile spanning very different settings: introductory play, public space and federation competition.
