Chigorin Defense

Also known as: Queen's Gambit Declined, Chigorin Defense

A Queen's Gambit defense where Black develops the queen-side knight early and pressures the center with pieces instead of reinforcing it with pawns.

Explanation

The Chigorin Defense is recognized when, after White offers the c-pawn against Black's d-pawn, Black immediately develops the queenside knight from b8 to c6. Instead of protecting the d5-pawn with another pawn, Black uses a piece to increase pressure on White's center and aims for rapid development.

This choice has a concrete consequence: the knight on c6 occupies the square through which Black's c-pawn would normally advance. Black therefore gives up one of the usual Queen's Gambit pawn breaks for the moment. In return, the knight pressures d4, often helps prepare an e-pawn advance to e5, and supports active piece development. The Chigorin trades pawn flexibility for immediate piece pressure.

...Nc6 defines the Chigorin by replacing the usual pawn support with development and immediate pressure on the center.
Black chooses immediate piece pressure

The characteristic reply develops the -knight without first reinforcing the -pawn.

White tries to use the central space without allowing Black's pieces to create too many threats. Exchanges can lead to open positions where Black's activity matters greatly. Compared with the , the structural distinction is clear: the Ragozin usually supports d5 with the e-pawn on e6 and develops the g8-knight to f6 before moving the bishop to b4, while the Chigorin gets its identity from the early development of the b8-knight to c6.

Common confusions

Ragozin Defense

The Chigorin is defined by the early knight development to c6 and by not reinforcing d5 in the usual way. The Ragozin keeps a normal Queen's Gambit Declined center and adds pressure with the bishop on b4.
