French Defense, Winawer Variation, Poisoned Pawn Variation

The Winawer Poisoned Pawn Variation may continue 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 Ne7 7.Qg4 Qc7 8.Qxg7 Rg8 9.Qxh7 cxd4. White captures the g7 and h7 pawns with the queen, while Black gains time by attacking that queen and White's center.

The sequence is written in algebraic notation: squares such as e4 combine a column letter and row number; N means knight, B bishop, R rook, and Q queen; pawn moves normally show their destination, x marks a capture, and + marks check. Moves are read in pairs, White first and Black second; dots before a move shown alone indicate Black's turn.

A poisoned pawn appears available, but taking it exposes the capturing piece to active threats in reply. The material is not free here: White's queen moves far from the other pieces, Black's rook reaches g8 while attacking it and forces another queen move, and ...cxd4 strikes d4, the pawn supporting e5. The earlier Bxc3+ bxc3 exchange has also left White with doubled c-pawns, two friendly pawns on the same file, that may become targets.

Why both sides accept the risk

• White relies on the extra material, control of more central squares, and the possibility of sheltering the queen while bringing the remaining pieces out.
• Black relies on pieces entering play quickly, open files, vertical lines without pawns blocking the rooks, pressure against c3 and d4, and threats against White's king.

This variation is highly sensitive to move order. A sound capture in one position may be a mistake in another that looks nearly identical. It is not enough to remember that the queen takes two pawns: the player must calculate the queen's escape route and the consequences in the center. The McCutcheon Variation also creates damaged pawn arrangements and sharp play, but it begins with a different bishop move and does not share this capture sequence.
