Loose Pieces Drop Off

Explanation

Loose Pieces Drop Off, abbreviated LPDO, is a tactical maxim popularized by chess player and author John Nunn; the historical account cited by ChessBase says the phrase was probably coined by Mike Cook. Its purpose is to direct attention to a common seed of tactics: a piece that is not securely defended.

A “loose” piece may be completely undefended, defended fewer times than it is attacked, or protected only by an overloaded piece that already has another duty. It may also be vulnerable to an attack that demands a reply. The piece need not fall immediately; its vulnerability may enable a , which attacks two targets at once, or a pin, where moving a piece would expose something more valuable, as well as favorable exchange sequences.

LPDO is an alarm, not an automatic law. Some undefended pieces are safe because the opponent cannot attack them or because capturing them permits a tactical reply. The concrete position must still be checked. Even so, scanning for loose pieces before and after every move prevents many , errors in imagining a concrete sequence of moves and replies.

A practical scan

  1. Locate your own and your opponent’s pieces with no defender.
  2. Check pieces attacked and defended once, especially when the defender cannot move without exposing the king or something more valuable, or already has another duty.
  3. Ask whether a check, capture, or threat can attack two targets at once.
  4. Use the result in , the process of comparing options and choosing one, without assuming every loose piece must be attacked immediately.
