Move confirmation

Also known as: Confirm move

A setting that requires approval of a selected move before it is submitted to the online board.

Explanation

With move confirmation, placing a piece on a square does not immediately complete the move. The interface displays the selected move and asks for another action. Only after confirmation is it sent to the , recorded, and passed to the opponent.

The setting helps prevent accidental input, especially on touchscreens or when a drops a piece on the wrong square. It checks what the user meant to submit, not whether the chess decision is good. A poor move remains valid once it is confirmed.

Confirmation also costs time. It can be helpful in games with generous thinking time, but awkward in fast time controls where every tap or click matters. Availability and exact behavior vary by platform and game settings.

Usage and context

This is an online interface feature, not a general rule of over-the-board chess.

Common confusions
