Explanation
The Dutch system is a regulated pairing method for Swiss tournaments, where a fixed number of rounds is played and participants on similar scores generally meet. To process a bracket of players, it temporarily divides them into two subgroups, S1 and S2, and tries to pair corresponding positions. If the first arrangement breaks a rule, such as pairing two players who have already met, a different order must be tested.
A pairing transposition changes the order of the in S2. A resident is a player from the scoregroup that forms the bracket. A transposition keeps exactly the same people in S1 and S2; it only changes which S2 player stands opposite each position in S1.
The operation creates new candidates without altering scores, previous colors, or results. Players do not see it as an intermediate round. If every transposition fails, the algorithm may proceed to a , which does change subgroup membership.
