Philidor Defense

Also known as: Philidor's Defense, Philidor Defence

A defense beginning with e4, e5, Nf3, and ...d6, supporting the e5-pawn with a compact structure.

Explanation

The Philidor Defense arises after e4, ...e5, Nf3, and ...d6. Black supports the e5-pawn with the d7-pawn instead of developing the knight to c6. The position is compact and reduces some immediate threats, but the pawn on d6 also occupies part of the f8-bishop's diagonal and restricts its activity.

The -knight attacks . If Black neither protects nor moves that pawn, White may capture it.
White's knight makes Black decide how to support

After 1. 2.Nf3, Black must respond to the pressure on the central pawn.

White normally answers with d4 to build a broad center and force Black to decide whether to capture, maintain the tension, or develop first. Black aims to continue with ...Nf6 and ...Be7, castle, and only then challenge White's center. If Black completes development without becoming restricted, the position is resilient. If White gains space without facing counterplay, Black's pieces may remain trapped behind their pawns.

The Philidor is solid because it avoids immediate tactical concessions, but solidity does not require permanent passivity. Black needs to prepare pawn breaks, especially ...f5 or ...d5 when they are safe, in order to open lines. Unlike the , which plays ...f5 at once and accepts major risks, the Philidor first secures e5 and develops more cautiously.
