The Queen's Pawn Game begins with d4, the two-square advance of the pawn that started in front of White's queen. The pawn occupies a central square, controls c5 and e5, and opens a route for the c1-bishop. It is also protected by the queen from d1.

The term describes a broad family, not a complete sequence. After d4, Black may answer with ...d5, ...Nf6, ...f5, ...e6, ...g6, or other moves, and White can choose very different plans. Some continuations challenge the center immediately with c4; others build a setup before opening the position.
