Sicilian Defense, Moscow Variation

In algebraic notation, b5 means column b and row 5. The Moscow Variation arises when Black plays c5 followed by d6 and White moves the f1-bishop to b5 with check. That check forces Black to respond before White decides what to do with the d-pawn.

The normal replies are to block with the bishop on d7, the knight on c6, or the knight on d7. If Black's bishop reaches d7, White may exchange bishops and shelter the king quickly by castling, the special move that relocates the king and a rook in one turn. If a knight blocks, White's bishop may capture it and alter Black's pawn arrangement, or retreat and remain on the board. None of these choices wins a piece or pawn by itself; their value lies in the position they create.

The Moscow is an Anti-Sicilian, a system chosen to avoid the huge Open Sicilian family immediately. White often follows with castling, c3 and d4, or with c4. The play may develop through gradual plans, but it is not automatically quiet because checks, captures, and concrete threats can still appear.
