Vuković's mate

In Vuković's mate, a protected rook checks the king at the edge of the board. A knight controls the escape squares the rook cannot cover.

The rook is usually very close to the king, so it needs protection to prevent capture. That protection may come from the attacking king or a pawn. The knight completes the net with L-shaped attacks that reach squares outside the rook's straight lines.

Separate protection, precise closure

The net separates three jobs: the rook delivers mate, the king protects it, and the knight covers the escape square outside the rook’s lines.

1. The rook on h7 checks the king on h8.
2. The white king on g6 protects the rook on h7 and prevents its capture.
3. The knight on e7 controls g8, the only escape square outside the rook’s lines.

To recognize the pattern, verify three jobs: the mating rook, the piece protecting that rook, and the knight covering the remaining exits. If the knight is unnecessary or the rook is unprotected, it is a different pattern. The division of labor recalls suffocation mate, but there the knight gives the check.
