Explanation

The Benoni Defense is not one rigid move sequence but a family of openings against White's center after d4. The common idea is an early ...c5, with Black's c-pawn challenging White's pawn on d4. If White advances to d5, the central pawns often remain on the board rather than being exchanged, creating a closed or semi-closed center. White usually has more space, meaning more room behind the pawn line for the pieces, while the two sides attack different targets.

Black often allows White to hold more central space in return for an unbalanced position. Rather than occupying the whole center with pawns, Black tries to pressure it with pieces and create play on one side of the board. White usually tries to use the extra space for easy development and central expansion before Black creates enough counterplay, meaning active threats that force White to respond.

Benoni is therefore a family name. The adds an early advance of Black's e-pawn and usually reaches a distinctive pawn structure. The offers a queenside pawn to open lines. Seeing the c-pawn advance to c5 alone is not enough to identify the exact Benoni branch.
