Arena International Master

Explanation

Arena International Master, abbreviated AIM, is one of the lower-rating-band titles of FIDE Online Arena, the official online playing environment associated with the International Chess Federation, . A rating is a number used to estimate playing strength from results. AIM belongs to this online title system and is not the same title as over-the-board International Master, or IM.

The central requirement is to maintain an online rating of 1700 or higher for a minimum number of games determined by the time control. Under the platform's current process, only rated tournament games count toward title progress. Receiving the recognized title also requires a PRO account and a connected , the unique number identifying a registered player in FIDE's database.

  • 50 rapid games, using the slowest of these three online time categories.
  • 100 blitz games, using a faster time control.
  • 150 bullet games, using the fastest of the three.

The next lower title is , followed by . Current platform documentation requires Arena titles to be obtained in order, so ACM and AFM must be obtained before AIM. Although AIM contains the words “International Master,” it is not earned through over-the-board and does not use the same qualification rules.

Common confusions

International Master (IM)

AIM is a FIDE Online Arena title based on online rating and qualifying game volume. IM is an over-the-board FIDE title with a different qualification process, normally involving rating and norms.
