Explanation

The World Computer Chess Championship, usually shortened to WCCC, was a competition among programs or computer systems that selected their own chess moves. A is software that analyzes positions and decides what to play. It may run on an ordinary computer or use specialized hardware, meaning physical components designed to accelerate particular calculations.

People were still needed to enter the system, prepare the equipment, and follow technical procedures, but they did not replace the program by choosing its chess moves during play. The rules for each edition defined what human intervention was permitted.

Resources that could affect performance

  • The program code, including its methods for exploring continuations and estimating positions.
  • Processors, memory, and, where relevant, graphics cards.
  • An opening book, a prepared collection of early positions and moves.
  • Tablebases, precomputed files that solve endings with few pieces.

Each edition had entrants and pairings, meaning which systems met in each round. Its time control set how much thinking time was available on the clock, and its rules also defined tie-breaks and the champion or champions. The first WCCC was played in 1974. The 2024 event, held fifty years later, was announced as the final ICGA World Computer Chess Championship. WCCC therefore now names a historical championship series, not a permanent engine rating list or a single human-versus-machine exhibition.

Usage and context

Published hardware specifications help readers interpret results because the same program may perform differently with different computing resources.

Common confusions

Program and computer

The program supplies the playing methods; the computer supplies the physical resources that run them. Both could affect championship performance.

Historical series and current event

The ICGA series concluded with the 2024 edition. The term still names the championship, its editions, and its historical legacy.
