Explanation

An active king does more than avoid checkmate. It attacks pawns, protects friendly pawns, escorts a pawn toward promotion, occupies , and restricts the opposing king. In many endgames it can become the most influential piece on the board.

Activity does not mean centralizing the king automatically. A king is active when it is close to a useful task and can improve that task. Sometimes activity means entering enemy territory; elsewhere it means blockading a pawn or stopping the opposing king from approaching.

Timing matters. While queens, rooks, or serious mating threats remain, an exposed king may still be unsafe. As those threats disappear, the king changes from a piece that needs shelter into a fighting piece. Techniques such as and make direct use of that strength.
