Explanation

The Arkhangelsk Variation is defined by 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O b5 6.Bb3 Bb7. Black gains queenside space with ...b5, makes White's bishop retreat, and develops the c8-bishop to b7.

From b7, the bishop is aligned along the b7-c6-d5-e4-f3-g2-h1 diagonal, but Black's c6-knight blocks the line at first. Its influence on e4 is latent: it may become direct if the knight reorganizes or central exchanges clear the diagonal. The ...d5 break can accelerate that transformation by changing the center.

The Arkhangelsk begins on the queenside

Instead of taking or developing with ...Be7, Black advances the b-pawn to gain space and displace White's bishop.

Black delays development of the f8-bishop and often delays castling. In return, Black seeks immediate activity and the bishop pair. This tradeoff between safety and dynamism explains the variation's sharp character: if Black opens the center at the right moment, the bishops can become powerful; if development falls behind, the king may become vulnerable.

White commonly chooses between defending e4 with Re1, preparing a center with c3 and d4, or developing more quietly with d3. White may also target the advanced b5-pawn. Black must justify the gained space with development and counterplay, not merely with more pawn moves.

The traditional Arkhangelsk places the c8-bishop on b7. The Modern or Neo-Arkhangelsk normally develops the f8-bishop to c5. They are related systems, but the bishop's destination is the clearest visible difference. The variation belongs to the and often creates more open play than many branches of the .

6...Bb7 is the traditional Arkhangelsk, developing the -bishop along a diagonal initially blocked by the -knight.
After 6.Bb3 Black has two related development choices

Both systems seek activity, but they mobilize different bishops and create different pressure. They are alternatives, not stages of one plan.
