Caro-Kann Defense, Panov Attack

In algebraic notation, a letter identifies the column and a number identifies the row; d5 is the square in column d and row 5. The Panov Attack begins inside the Caro-Kann Defense. White first exchanges the e-pawn for Black's d-pawn. After Black's c-pawn recaptures on d5, White advances the c-pawn to c4. This attacks d5 and opens the center so the pieces can act more freely.

After further exchanges, White is often left with an isolated queen's pawn on d4. It is an isolated pawn because no friendly pawn remains on the neighboring c-file or e-file to protect it. The pawn may become a long-term target, but it also controls useful squares, opens columns and diagonals for the pieces, and may advance to d5 at the right moment.

What each side gains and gives up

• White tries to bring the pieces out quickly, create threats, and advance the d4-pawn to d5 before a black piece can sit in front of it and stop it.
• Black tries to control d5, blockade the isolated pawn, exchange White's most active pieces, and attack the pawn when the immediate danger has passed.
