Chessboxing

Chessboxing combines two disciplines within a single contest. The competitors play a short chess round, move to boxing, and then return to the board. The position is not reset: every chess segment continues the same game, and every boxing round belongs to the same bout.

The chess portion uses a clock and a fast time control, meaning that each competitor has a limited total amount of thinking time for the whole game. During each transition, the chess clock is stopped, gloves are removed or put on, and the playing area is prepared for the next discipline.

How the contest can end

• By checkmate, when a king is attacked and no legal reply can save it.
• By running out of chess time, resignation, or a penalty for deliberately delaying a move.
• By knockout, when a boxer cannot continue after the required count.
• By technical knockout or referee stoppage, when the official ends the bout because continuing is unsafe or contrary to the rules.

If neither discipline produces an early decision, scorecards containing the boxing judges' point totals commonly determine the result. The final tie-break, number and length of rounds, total chess time, protective equipment, and entry requirements depend on the organizer. A common professional structure has six chess rounds and five boxing rounds, but not every event uses exactly that format.

Chessboxing does not change how the pieces move. It is a hybrid sporting format, not a board-rule variant. Its distinctive challenge is repeatedly switching between calculation under clock pressure and intense physical effort without losing control in either discipline.
