Explanation

Development means moving pieces from their starting squares to places where they take part in the game. It also commonly includes preparing king safety and connecting the rooks. A development advantage means that one side needs fewer moves to have its forces ready.

The specification for the text format used to store games calls this a time or development advantage. Here, “time” means tempi, or useful moves on the board, not minutes on the clock. Numeric Annotation Glyphs (NAGs) $30-$35 distinguish White or Black and three degrees. Some applications show ↻ for White and ↺ for Black, repeating the arrow for greater strength; ⟳ is a specialized form of the sign.

A development lead can support , an early attack, or the , but it is not identical to any of them. A side may have more pieces developed without forcing threats, or spend a tempo to gain a lasting improvement. The symbol summarizes relative piece readiness within the .

Clock advantage

The historical phrase “time advantage” refers to useful moves gained on the board, not to either player's remaining clock time.

In an interface, ↻ and ↺ may resemble navigation controls. In chess annotation they represent development and side.
