Einstellung effect

The Einstellung effect occurs when a familiar idea becomes so dominant that it restricts the search for better options. In chess, a player may recognize a motif that usually works, begin analyzing it, and fail to explore a stronger solution available in the same position.

Experiments using chess tasks and eye tracking found that attention can remain concentrated on squares associated with the familiar solution even when that solution is not best. This is not merely a lack of knowledge: the player may have the ability to find the alternative, but the first mental set narrows what is examined. Experts can also be affected.

Chunking and rapid recognition are normally useful. The problem begins when a recognized response is accepted too early. In De Groot’s four-stage model, this resembles ending exploration before enough options have been generated and compared.

How to reduce it

• Form at least one alternative based on a different idea.
• Ask what you would consider if the familiar move were unavailable.
• On a critical move, a decision where an inferior option can greatly change the result, compare concrete consequences before accepting the first recognizable solution.

It should not be confused with intuition. Intuition may produce a strong first candidate; Einstellung occurs when that candidate improperly blocks further search.
