The = sign in chess analysis means that the position is considered balanced. The players do not need to have identical material, space, or activity; rather, one side's advantages are judged to be sufficiently offset by the other's.

A position can receive = despite an obvious imbalance. One player might have an extra pawn while the opponent has activity, initiative, or better king safety. The symbol summarizes the whole position instead of each feature separately.

Equality also does not guarantee a draw. Difficult choices, mistakes, and winning chances may remain. The mark only says that, with correct play from that point, the annotator sees no important advantage for either side.

Three different uses of the equal sign

• As an evaluation symbol, = means a balanced position.
• In promotion notation, e8=Q means that a pawn becomes a queen.
• On a FIDE scoresheet, (=) may mark a draw offer.

None of those uses is the same as the result ½-½. That marker is used only after a game has officially ended in a draw.
