ICCF Senior International Master

ICCF Senior International Master, abbreviated SIM, is a player title specific to the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF). In correspondence chess, moves are transmitted remotely and players receive long reflection times. Within its hierarchy, SIM stands between International Master and Grandmaster. The word Senior indicates a level above IM, not an age category.

A norm is a regulated minimum performance in an event eligible for titles. ICCF awards SIM to the winner of an ICCF World Cup Final or to a player who earns at least two senior master norms in international title tournaments, normally across at least 24 games. An overscore, meaning a result at least half a point above the score required for a norm, may reduce that total.

A specially qualified national-federation application is another route and requires a two-thirds majority of the ICCF Congress. The current regulations also preserve a transitional provision for certain IM results earned in events started or approved before the 2000 Daytona Congress.

FIDE, the International Chess Federation, has no player title with this same rung and name. SIM should therefore not be treated as an age-based form of International Master or mapped automatically to a particular FIDE title.
