Explanation

Nottingham 1936 was played at the University of Nottingham from August 10 to 28. Its fifteen competitors played a single round robin, so each participant met the other fourteen once. The schedule produced 105 games.

José Raúl Capablanca and Mikhail Botvinnik shared first place with 10 points from 14 games. There was no sole winner. The result symbolically joined a former world champion with the player who would later become the central figure in the Soviet world-championship system.

The historical strength of the field was exceptional. Five participants were past, reigning, or future world champions: Emanuel Lasker, Capablanca, Alexander Alekhine, Max Euwe, and Botvinnik. Leading masters from several generations were also present, allowing different styles and schools of play to be compared within one event.

It was Lasker's last major tournament. Nottingham is often studied beside events such as , but it is especially remembered for its concentration of champions and the shared victory of Capablanca and Botvinnik.
