Explanation

The Old Indian Defense begins with Black developing the knight that starts next to the king and advancing the d-pawn to d6 against a White center built with the queen pawn and c-pawn. Black's usual idea is to prepare the e-pawn advance to e5 to challenge that center. Instead of immediately placing a pawn on d5, Black waits and builds a compact position.

A useful identifying feature is the bishop that starts next to the king. In the Old Indian it commonly develops to e7. In the King's Indian Defense, by contrast, Black usually uses a fianchetto: the g-pawn moves and the bishop develops onto the long diagonal at g7. That difference changes the bishop's line of influence and the way Black attacks White's center.

White can occupy a broad center

The Old Indian Defense allows White to gain space while Black prepares a compact response.

White normally uses the available time to claim central space. Black aims to finish development, , the special king-and-rook move used to shelter the king, and choose the right moment for the e-pawn advance to e5 or, in some structures, a c-pawn advance to c5. Because a bishop on e7 can initially have less reach than one on g7, Black relies on coordinated piece play rather than automatic long-diagonal pressure.

Common confusions

King's Indian Defense

Both can begin with a knight on f6 and a pawn on d6. The clearest distinction is that the King's Indian usually fianchettoes the king bishop to g7, while the Old Indian commonly develops it to e7.
