Pawn lever

Contact between opposing pawns that can capture each other, usually created by an advance intended to change their arrangement.

Explanation

A pawn lever arises when opposing pawns come into contact and can capture each other. An advance usually creates that relationship. The pawns are then in tension: either may capture, or both may maintain the position. The interaction works like a lever because a short-range unit can transform a much larger part of the board.

When the tension is resolved, vertical files may open for rooks, diagonals for bishops, entry squares for pieces, or routes for a passed pawn, a pawn with no enemy pawn ahead of it on the same file or either neighboring file. The lever may also attack the base of a pawn chain and produce , meaning that the support is attacked before the main target. Its value depends on which pieces are ready to use the lines that open.

  • The enemy pawn captures: identify which piece or pawn would recapture and what the new pawn arrangement would be.
