Philidor Defense, Hanham Variation

Coordinates such as d6 use a column letter and a row number in algebraic notation. The Hanham Variation is recognized by a compact formation: Black’s pawn on d6 supports the pawn on e5, and the b8-knight moves to d7. Black does not try to claim more space immediately. The aim is to keep the center stable while preparing to bring out the other knight and bishop while securing the king.

The knight on d7 reinforces e5 and can support a later c-pawn advance that challenges White’s center. The drawback is that it temporarily blocks the bishop on c8 and gives White more space, meaning more territory and freedom for the pieces. White can bring the pieces out naturally and choose the right moment to open the center.

Black’s plan depends on move order. The same pieces can reach a similar structure by different routes, but a misplaced piece or a premature pawn move may let White open lines before the black king is safe. It is therefore better to understand the purpose of each move than to copy a formation without checking the actual position.
