An adaptable set of connected actions intended to achieve a concrete goal in the current position.

Explanation

A plan connects several moves through one purpose. It may aim to improve a piece, attack a pawn, open a file for a rook by removing the pawns from that vertical line, exchange a defender, or prepare a pawn advance. A plan comes from evaluating the position, not from memorizing a sequence that must be followed regardless of the opponent's play.

Planning also does not mean calculating thirty exact moves. Calculation examines concrete variations: if one move is played, what replies are available and what happens next. The plan supplies direction, while calculation checks whether each step works now.

A practical process

  1. Check immediate threats, because no slow idea matters if checkmate or the loss of a piece or pawn is imminent.
  2. Evaluate material; king safety; activity, meaning how many useful squares the pieces have; space, meaning how much of the board each side controls; and pawn structure to apply the right , the choice of long-term priorities.
  3. Choose an achievable objective and identify several candidate moves, meaning moves worth calculating.
  4. After every opposing reply, evaluate again. Keep the objective if it remains valid or change plans when the position demands it.

A good plan also considers the opponent's intentions. Sometimes the best continuation does not advance your own idea but prevents theirs or introduces a , a move or idea that changes the problem and the priorities. Flexibility is part of planning, not evidence that the earlier plan was useless.
