Quad tournament

A quad tournament normally places four players in one section. It is played as a round robin, meaning that every participant faces each of the other three once. The usual schedule therefore has three rounds and gives each player three games.

A larger event may contain many separate quads. Organizers commonly group players of similar strength, often using ratings, the numerical estimates of competitive strength. Each group has its own standings and does not need to play across the other groups.

The word quad primarily describes the group of four, not a universal rule for handling every entry count. When the number of players is not divisible by four, the event regulations may turn the last section into a group of another size or a small Swiss tournament, where a fixed number of rounds is played without everyone meeting everyone else.
