Queen ending

A queen ending is a position in which queens are the main pieces left besides the kings and pawns. A queen has enormous range and can check from many directions, so king safety remains critical even when very few pieces are left.

An extra pawn may be difficult to convert when the stronger side's king is exposed. The defender often seeks perpetual check, a checking sequence that the opponent cannot escape without abandoning the winning attempt or allowing the position to repeat. A repetition that meets the rules can end the game as a draw.

Practical priorities

• Find shelter for your king before advancing a decisive pawn.
• Activate the queen with checks that also improve its placement or attack a pawn.
• Place the queen near the center when it can control more squares without allowing an unfavorable exchange.
• Calculate every queen trade. It may remove perpetual-check threats, but it may also lead to a pawn ending that is not won.
• Treat passed pawns, meaning pawns with no enemy pawns ahead in their vertical column or the neighboring columns, as urgent threats because a queen can support them and clear their route from far away.

Precision matters more than any single rule. A check forces a reply, but it may also pull the queen away from a defensive duty. Before giving it, calculate what changes after the opposing king responds.
