Explanation

Samuel Reshevsky first became famous as a child prodigy. At eight, he was already giving simultaneous exhibitions against twenty or more players. He stepped away from competition during his teenage years to focus on education, then returned to tournaments at twenty rather than following an uninterrupted childhood career.

From prodigy to title contender

Reshevsky repeatedly won the United States championship and remained a serious world-title contender from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s. He qualified for four , the events used to select a challenger for the world champion.

He also represented the United States in eight spread across 37 years. During his long career he faced eleven of the first twelve world champions and defeated seven of them at least once. His play combined positional understanding, meaning long-term plans and structural judgment, with tactical skill in calculating forcing checks, captures, and threats.
