White decides how to answer the pawn on

White can capture the pawn on with 4.Nxd4. The Scotch Gambit begins when White postpones that recapture.

A gambit is an opening offer of material in exchange for another advantage. White is buying time, open lines, and coordination. Time means useful moves gained while Black decides how to protect the extra pawn. Coordination means several pieces can work together against the center and the black king.

Black does not have to cling to the pawn on d4. The move ...Nf6 develops a knight and attacks e4, and some sequences transpose into the . White often castles quickly, places a rook on e1, and uses c3 to challenge or recover the pawn. Spending too many moves chasing material before finishing development defeats the purpose of the gambit.

The extra pawn does not require passive defense

After 4.Bc4, Black can answer with developing moves that create problems instead of merely trying to hold .

The Scotch Gambit creates active positions, but it does not guarantee a winning attack. Black may return the pawn at a convenient moment and complete development. Its practical value comes from posing concrete problems while White's pieces enter the game quickly.

Common confusions

Scotch Gambit and Goring Gambit

The Scotch Gambit is defined by 4.Bc4. The Goring Gambit uses 4.c3 and may offer another pawn to accelerate development of the b1-knight.
