Slav Defense, Chebanenko Variation

The Chebanenko Variation arises in the Slav Defense when Black plays ...a6 before deciding whether to capture on c4 or advance the e-pawn. The move controls b5 and, most importantly, prepares ...b5 to gain queenside space.

Black adds a flexible preparatory move

Instead of resolving the center immediately, Black prepares queenside expansion.

A typical idea is ...dxc4 followed by ...b5, supporting the advanced pawn and forcing White's pieces to react. But ...a6 also preserves options: Black can play ...e6 and approach a Semi-Slav structure, develop the c8-bishop outside the pawn chain, or maintain the central tension. Because the setup can change shape, it is also called the Chameleon Variation.
