Standard Points

Standard Points, abbreviated STD, is a tie-break, meaning a rule for ordering participants who finished on the same score. It is based on the participant's own record. In every round it compares the points received by the participant with the points received by the scheduled opponent. When no game was played, it compares the awarded score with the number of points the tournament gives for a draw.

• It contributes 1 standard point when the participant receives more than the scheduled opponent, or receives without playing more than a draw is worth.
• It contributes 0.5 when both receive the same amount, or when an unplayed award is exactly equal to a draw.
• It contributes 0 when the participant receives less than the opponent, or less than a draw is worth.

With ordinary scoring of 1 for a win, 0.5 for a draw and 0 for a loss, STD often matches the normal points from played games. Its purpose becomes clearer when an event uses another scoring scale or assigns special values to unplayed rounds: every round is converted back to a common 1, 0.5 or 0 scale. It is therefore not simply another name for games won or for the total shown in the standings.
