Explanation

Time trouble, also known by the German term Zeitnot, begins when the remaining clock time no longer supports the player's usual depth and order of thought. There is no universal number of seconds. It depends on the starting time, the seconds added after each move, the position's complexity, and the player's speed.

Under this pressure, fewer replies are calculated, familiar-looking ideas carry more weight, and a becomes more likely. Physical execution at the board and awareness of the clock may also deteriorate. Being in time trouble does not mean the position is lost; it describes a time constraint, not an , meaning a judgment of which side stands better.

The practical response is to simplify the decision process. Identify the opponent's threat first, consider checks and captures, choose among a small number of reasonable options, and retain a minimal final safety scan. Use the opponent's time to study the position, then update it when the move arrives. aims to prevent this state; a is an even more acute phase of near-instant moves.
