Explanation

In the glossary of the FIDE Laws, +/- means that White wins by forfeit in an unplayed game. The + belongs to the side awarded the win, and the - belongs to the side recorded with the loss.

This is an administrative result, not a description of a move on the board. The specific reason depends on the event regulations or an arbiter's ruling, such as failure to appear within the allowed time. The symbol records the scoring consequence rather than every detail of the incident.

It is not the White-advantage symbol

The same text +/- is used in some analysis systems as an ASCII replacement for , meaning a moderate White advantage. It also resembles , meaning a decisive White advantage. Context is essential: in a FIDE result table for unplayed games, +/- is a forfeit; after an analyzed line, it may be an evaluation.

Core accepts only 1-0, 0-1, 1/2-1/2, and * as final markers. A PGN database will therefore commonly keep the White win as 1-0 and preserve the administrative reason in a compatible tag, comment, or separate field.

Common confusions
