Explanation

The Woodpecker Method is a tactical training protocol focused on concrete sequences of checks, captures, and threats, developed by Hans Tikkanen and published with Axel Smith. The learner chooses a large but manageable set of positions, solves the whole set, and then works through exactly the same material several more times. Each cycle aims to preserve accuracy while reducing total time.

How a cycle works

  1. Solve each position through real calculation rather than naming the first familiar move.
  2. Check the complete solution and review why alternatives fail.
  3. Record errors and time to establish a baseline.
  4. Repeat the same set after a break.
  5. Compress the cycle gradually without accepting a major loss of accuracy.

Repetition is intended to make recurring patterns, tactical signals, and common sequences easier to retrieve. Remembering part of a solution does not invalidate the exercise: the learner should still reconstruct the sequence and understand the defenses. Speed is a result of more efficient recognition, not permission to guess.

The method is not a synonym for all spaced repetition. Its defining feature is intensive reuse of a fixed set in compressed cycles. It also does not replace a curriculum such as the , game analysis, or careful study of recurring errors.
