Explanation

The result 0-1 means that Black won. White's value is written first, so 0 appears on the left and Black's 1 appears on the right.

In Portable Game Notation (PGN), the plain-text game format, the marker is placed after the move list and must match the information field named Result. It uses digits: 0-1, not capital O letters.

The marker does not explain the cause. The game may have ended because White's king was attacked with no legal defense, because White resigned, because White ran out of time, or because of a tournament official's ruling. 0-1 only identifies the winner. Compare it with , , and .

0-1 and O-O

0-1 is a result written with numbers; represents kingside castling with capital O letters.
