1/2-1/2

Also known as: ½-½, draw

A result marker stating that the game ended in a draw.

This page is temporarily shown in English. Complete localization will be added in a later stage.

Explanation

The result 1/2-1/2 means a draw: there is no winner and, under normal scoring, each player receives half a point. The typographic form ½-½ has the same meaning.

Portable Game Notation (PGN), the plain-text format for storing games, uses exactly 1/2-1/2. It appears after the moves and in the information field named Result. It is not replaced by 0.5-0.5 or an equals sign.

The marker does not reveal the reason. A draw may result from agreement, stalemate, where the player to move has no legal move but is not in check, repetition of a position, or a dead position, where no legal sequence can end with either side delivering checkmate. Checkmate means that the king is attacked and has no legal reply. A does not create this result until it is accepted or another draw rule ends the game.

The alternatives are for a White win, for a Black win, and when no final result is available.
