FIDE Grand Prix

The FIDE Grand Prix is a series of competitions organized within certain open World Championship cycles. FIDE stands for the International Chess Federation. A series contains several tournaments, often called legs, and awards Grand Prix points according to each player's finish in those events.

These are not the same as points scored in individual games or in a tournament table. Grand Prix points create a cumulative series ranking. In the 2022 edition, three tournaments were held and the top two players in the final series standings qualified for the Candidates Tournament, which selects the challenger to the world champion. The exact format, number of legs, and qualification consequences can change from one cycle to another.

It should not be confused with the Grand Chess Tour, an independent international circuit whose standings do not automatically form a world-title route. It is also separate from the FIDE Women's Grand Prix, which belongs to the women's world championship cycle and has its own regulations.
