Explanation
FIDE stands for the International Chess Federation. The Women's Grand Prix, abbreviated WGP, is an official series in the Women's World Championship cycle. Players take part in different legs and receive WGP points according to their finishing place in each tournament. The results specified by the regulations are then combined into an overall series ranking.
The central idea is to reward sustained performance across more than one event. In the 2024-2025 series, for example, each player competed in three of six tournaments, and the top two in the cumulative standings qualified for the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament. Those numbers describe one edition: the calendar, field, and qualification paths may change in the next cycle.
The WGP is not one large tournament. That distinction separates it from the , a single Swiss-system event, and the , which eliminates players round by round. It also has its own structure, separate from the open .
