Explanation

The Marshall Attack arises inside the after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 O-O 8.c3 d5. The move 8...d5 strikes the center before White can play d4 under comfortable conditions.

Black strikes before arrives

White has prepared with , but Black can open the center first and force White to calculate.

Black is prepared to sacrifice the e5-pawn. In return, Black seeks the initiative, the ability to make threats that force the opponent to respond. The ...d5 break opens diagonals and files for the queen, bishops, and rooks while most of Black's pieces are developed and White's king is already on the kingside.

Accepting the gambit usually leads to a forcing series of central exchanges followed by pressure against White's king. Attack does not mean forced mate. With accurate defense, White may keep the extra pawn or return it to neutralize Black's activity. Black relies on coordination and time, not an automatic win.

In this representative continuation, White keeps an extra pawn but has lost the -knight, an important defender, while Black's pieces aim at the king.

Marshall theory is extensive because one inaccurate move can change the balance. It therefore appears often in , analysis done before a game with books, databases, or software. White can also choose an Anti-Marshall system, often by avoiding 8.c3, so that ...d5 cannot appear in its main form.

The gambit became famous when Frank Marshall used it against José Raúl Capablanca in New York in 1918. Capablanca survived the attack and won, but the idea endured and became one of the most deeply studied defenses to the .
