Explanation

In , d6 means column d and row 6. The Pirc Defense is normally recognized by a specific setup: Black plays d6, moves the g8-knight to f6, and prepares g6 so the bishop can reach g7. White commonly places pawns on e4 and d4 and moves a knight to c3.

Black prepares a defined setup without occupying the center

The Pirc combines ... with early development of the kingside knight.

Black allows that center in order to attack it, not to ignore it. The f6-knight pressures e4, the g7-bishop points toward d4, and the pawn advances c5 or e5 challenge White's pawns. A pawn break is an advance that makes contact with opposing pawns to open lines or force exchanges.

The pieces create targets and the pawns increase pressure

With both kings castled, Black can choose a break according to White's response and the placement of the pieces.

White enjoys more space, meaning control of more squares and more territory in which the pieces can move. White may choose calmly bringing out the pieces or an aggressive advance of the f-pawn. Black must coordinate before that space becomes a direct attack. The position is often unbalanced because each side has a different asset: territory for White and central targets for Black.

Usage and context

The opening is named after Slovenian player Vasja Pirc and is also known as the Pirc-Ufimtsev Defense.
