Explanation

Rapid chess sits between classical chess and blitz. Under the FIDE Laws of Chess, a game is rapid when each player has more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes to complete all moves.

If the clock uses an , FIDE does not consider only the starting minutes. For classification it uses the initial time plus 60 times the per-move increment. The full clock setting therefore matters, not just its first number.

Rapid games have specific rules for certain practical situations and, when official rating is involved, must also satisfy FIDE's Rapid and Blitz Rating Regulations. Online platforms may draw their own category boundaries, so a site's rapid label does not always match the FIDE definition exactly.
