Team match

A team match pits two teams against each other through several individual games, normally one per board. The player on board 1 of one team faces the corresponding player from the other team, and the same principle applies to the remaining boards. The number of boards and lineup rules depend on the competition.

When the games finish, their results are combined. Two scoring ideas are especially useful to distinguish in team events:

• Game points: the sum of results from the individual boards, for example 1 for a win and 0.5 for a draw.
• Match points: points awarded for winning, drawing, or losing the team match as a whole. A competition might use 2, 1, and 0.

Not every team event uses the same scoring system, so the event regulations control the details. A team match is also different from a consultation game: team members normally make decisions in their own separate games even though every result contributes to the team.
