Closed Ruy Lopez

The Closed Ruy Lopez is reached after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7. Black develops the f8-bishop and prepares to castle but does not immediately capture White's e4-pawn. The central pawns often remain opposed for several moves.

Black chooses how to handle the central tension

The f6-knight already attacks e4. Black can capture and enter the Open Ruy Lopez or develop the bishop without resolving the center yet.

Closed does not mean the position can never open. It means the central tension is preserved at first and bishops and rooks still find pawns in their paths. Both players often improve their pieces before making a pawn break, an advance such as d4, ...d5, or ...c5 that changes the center and opens lines.

Typical plans

• White often plays Re1 to support e4, c3 to prepare d4, and moves the b1-knight through d2 and f1 toward g3. A planned multi-move journey like this is called a maneuver.
• Black often gains space with ...b5, protects e5 with ...d6, castles, and then decides how to reorganize the c6-knight or when to strike the center.
• The Marshall Attack breaks early with ...d5, while the Breyer Defense and Chigorin Defense use slower maneuvers.

White prepares the center and reorganizes pieces. Black chooses a system through the destination of the c6-knight or the development of the c8-bishop.

5. ...Bb7 chooses the Zaitsev and prepares activity on the long diagonal.

The Closed Ruy Lopez is a broad family, not one sequence that must be repeated to the end. Small move-order changes can allow or prevent particular plans. Understanding the pawn structure matters because a poorly placed piece may require several moves to reach the side of the board where it is needed.

The direct alternative is the Open Ruy Lopez, where Black plays 5...Nxe4 and clarifies the center much earlier. In the Closed Ruy Lopez the battle is delayed, but it can become highly tactical when the pawn breaks finally occur.
