Explanation
The Slav Defense begins when, after d4, ...d5, and c4, Black plays ...c6. The c6-pawn supports the pawn on d5, so Black keeps a firm central presence without moving the e7-pawn yet.
... supports without shutting in the -bishop
Black chooses the c-pawn to support the center
The Slav reply reinforces without committing the -pawn yet.
That difference matters. Because e7 remains clear, the c8-bishop can develop to f5 or g4 before Black plays ...e6. In many lines, Black first captures on c4, develops that bishop, and then builds a safe structure. Black may also support the captured pawn with ...b5 and gain queenside space.
The capture on buys time to develop the bishop
The captured pawn creates a race between plans
Black decides whether to support or use the time to develop the bishop before closing the structure.
Common confusions
Slav and Semi-Slav
The Slav usually delays ...e6 so the c8-bishop can develop outside the pawn chain. The Semi-Slav plays ...e6 early, reinforces d5, and accepts that the bishop will remain closed in for a time.
